Rehearsals begin Monday, August 19th and run through Tuesday, September 24th. Opening Night is Thursday, September 25th and Closing Night is September 26th. Directing after closing, we will have Strike. This is when we clean up all sets, props, costumes, ticket tables, concession, dressing rooms, kitchen, etc...leaving all of the spaces we've used better than we found them. Strike is mandatory for all participating students.
The Utah High School Shakespeare Competition is a wonderful, meaningful event for our students. Here, students compete with other high school students from the entire Western Region with Shakespeare monologues, scenes, and ensemble pieces. We have participated since 2009 and have loved every year! Students will depart from SJCHS on Thursday, October 3rd at 9am. Mr. Fendrick will be transporting the students in the SJCHS mid-bus to Cedar City, Utah, where we will be staying. The event is held at Southern Utah University. We compete with our Ensemble Scene on Friday morning-afternoon. The first round of monologues and scenes will compete Friday evening. Friday night we will attend the Festival performance of "Much Ado About Nothing" giving our students the opportunity to see Broadway quality performances of Shakespeare! The second and third rounds will compete on Saturday morning-afternoon. Saturday night we will attend the awards show, then head back to the hotel. We depart back to Ogden on Sunday, October 6th, at 9am, arriving at SJCHS by approximately 2pm. Costs associated with participation include the hotel room, which ranges between $80-$100 per student. Students must bring money to pay for their meals, which includes lunch, snacks, and dinner for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, as well as some lunch money for Sunday. Breakfasts are covered at the hotel. We are staying at the Wingate in Cedar City. All parents are welcome to attend any part of this event with us, but you must make your own arrangements and cover all of your own expenses.
All students are expected to pay a one-time annual fee of $190 to SJCHS to participate in any theatre project. This fee covers a full year of theatre participation in all theatre events. These funds go to the Utah High School Activities Association who sanctions SJCHS for full theatre participation at Region and State High School theatre events. If you are struggling to meet this obligation, please contact Mrs. Hughes. We will help any student who wants to do theatre to participate!
Students are asked to supply their footwear, underclothing, socks, & hair and makeup items. We will send out a complete list of all of these items as we draw closer to the show opening.
Students are expected to be at all rehearsals for which they are called for which they do not have a previously listed conflict. Creating high-caliber, beautiful theatre takes everyone being in attendance, and we take attendance to rehearsals very seriously. If a student is more than 5-10 minutes, late, Akiva Bates, our Stage Manager, will call the student's number to check in. If the student misses rehearsals regularly, we will have a meeting to determine the cause with parent and student. Once we establish a new commitment, we will expect that both parent and student will make all efforts possible to attend all necessary rehearsals. Full commitment contributes overwhelmingly to student happiness and success in the production.
